In 1942 an ambitious young boy of twelve by the name of Mr. C. J. Shetty, left the cozy confines of his home in Balekunja, Dakshina Kannada to seek his fortune in Mumbai.
Even as he worked at various odd jobs in restaurants, he nursed a dream of owning a hotel at his native place.
By dint of sheer hard work he successfully ran several government Canteens and raised sufficient capital to be on the road to fulfilling his dreams.
His simple, kind and pleasing personality charmed every one who came across him. One such person was the great Mr. T A Pai of Manipal who helped him to eventually realise his dream by getting the Syndicate Bank to fund his hotel project in Udupi. He was an ethical businessman, who while wanting to make reasonable profits desired to render social service.
Remember, Udupi in those days didn't have the necessary infrastructure for hotels. Hence when Hotel Usha, his dream child was established on the 11th of October 1969 it was a tremendous pioneering effort. It ultimately became an important landmark so much so that people who have been lucky enough to have tasted its food spread its fame far and wide. So the next time you hear someone associating the name of Udupi with Hotel Usha, and you don't believe him, Come and see for yourself!!
