Dr. Ramdas M Pai
Dr. Ramdas M Pai is the illustrious son of an illustrious father. He inherited the mantle of leadership of the Manipal institutions from the late Dr. TMA Pai, the founder of Manipal.
After completing the Intermediate course at MGM during 1952-54, he joined the second batch of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and graduated with the MBBS degree in 1958. After completing a postgraduate course in hospital administration in Delhi, he trained further in hospital administration at the Albert Einstein Medic Centre in Philadelphia, USA.
Upon his return to Manipal in 1968, Dr. Pai took over as Medical Director of Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal. He modernized the academic and medical facilities, setting up new services such as the Burns Unit and the Operation Eyesight Universal Institute of Ophthalmology. He set linkages with universities in the US, UK, Australia, Finland, Germany, the West Indies and Nepal.
Dr. Ramdas M Pai has contributed to education and professional education at the national level. He has been a member of the Medical Council of India and the Dental Council of India, member of the Senate and Syndicate of Mangalore University, member of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and numerous other educational, business and social organisations. This year he was nominated by the Union Minister of Human Resource Development to a special six-member committee to advise the Ministry on higher education.
The most noteworthy milestone of the Manipal Group of Institutions was the granting of Deemed University status by the Government of India and the University Grants Commission to the Medical, Dental and Nursing Colleges in 1993 under the banner of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education. In recent years, Dr. Pai has established several new institutions: Sikkim Manipal University, Gangtok, Sikkim - Manipal Institute of Technology, Gangtok, Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Nepal, Manipal Institute of Communication, College of Allied Health Sciences, Manipal Hospital and Manipal Heart Foundation, Bangalore and several others. New academic programs in Information Sciences, Rural Studies, Management and Distance Education have been started. Several of the new courses have been set up in collaboration with industry. Twinning programs have been set up in Malaysia and with Universities in the US, UK and Australia.
Today there are about 50 educational institutions under him with about 30,000 students from 49 different countries, 2 Universities, 21 professional colleges covering all fields of knowledge and skill, signify the enormous responsibility that you are bearing in the service of humanity in general and education in particular. The 11 hospitals of the group with the flagship hospitals of Kasturba Hospital in Manipal and Manipal Hospital Bangalore offer state-of-the art facilities in health care and disease management.
He has received many awards like Dr. BC Roy National Award from the President of India in 1993, Named as National Professor by the Indian Medical Association in 1992, Received the key to the city of Loma Linda, USA in 1982 and 1991and received honorary doctorates from two American Universities, the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1996 and Andrews University in 1999, "Intellectual Honour - The Great Son of the Soil" by All India Conference of Intellectuals in 1997, appointed as Honorary Professor of International Health by the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1999, received the Phillips Medal of Ohio University, USA in recognition of public service, awarded the honorary fellowship of the faculty of General Dental Practitioners (FGDP) of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in September 2004 and Named the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the year 2004 in the Service category.
