M.Veerappa Moily was born on 12th January 1940 and is the son of Sri Thammaiah Moily and Smt. Poovamma. He married Smt. Malathi V. Moily in 1965 and is the proud father of four children Rashmi, Sushma, Hamsa and Harsha.
Mr. Moily completed his Primary and High School education at Moodabidri. In 1962 he graduated from the Govt. College Mangalore. He began his career in Fisheries Department and later in LIC. Meanwhile he earned a BL degree from the Govt. Law College, Bangalore. He began his legal career at Karkal, Mangalore and later at High Court of Karnataka. In 1969 he found The Kissan Sabha Trust. In 1968 he took to Politics by becoming a Member of Congress Party. Mr. Moily served as MLA for six terms from 1972 to1999 from the Karkala Assembly constituency, in Dakshina Kannada District. From 1974-77 he became Minister for Small Scale Industries. From 1980-1982 he served as Minister for Finance and Planning. Mr. Moily underwent a change of position by becoming the Leader of Opposition from 1983-1985. During the period from 1989 to 1992 he occupied different offices like the Minister for law, Youth Service, Culture, Information, Parliamentary affairs and Education. In the year 1992 he became the Chief Minister of Karnataka and continued in the same position till 1994.
A number of Awards have been bestowed on him. In the year 2000 he received the first Al-Ameen Sadbhavana Award 2000. The Award Devaraj Urs Prashasthi for the year 2001 was conferred on him in recognition of his contribution to the upliftment of Backward classes and Minorities. He also won the Aryabhatta Award for 2001. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Award for 2002 for Samagra Sahitya from Goruru Prathistana was bestowed on him.
ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN FOR THE UPLIFTMENT OF BACKWARD, DOWNTRODDEN AND MINORITIES :
He has contributed a lot for the welfare of backward classes by introducing State Panchayath Raj Act of 1993, mandatory reservations, Chinnappa Reddy Commission Report. He has helped the educational section by introducing CET which is a 100% transparent method with reservation for students opting various courses based on merit. He has established Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation, various craft complexes in the state and Leather Industries Development Corporation (LIDKAR).
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES
Mr. Moily established the Kissan Sabha Trust (regd.) with the main purpose of providing education or opportunities for child labour, dropouts, destitutes etc., and also provide health care, community development, and empowerment of the downtrodden.
SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES OF KISSAN SABHA TRUST
Kissan Sabha Trust established by Mr. Moily functioned in the direction of the upliftment of the suppressed class. Some of its major achievements are high school named as Mahatma Gandhi Residential High School were enrollment of the poor students is done. Besides, free education, food, lodging, uniform, books, health care etc., are being provided. The academic performance of the school is exemplary. This Trust has been also helping the tenants to get the benefit of Land Reforms Act. The other activities include, training programmes for CET, work based programmes for women, libraries and reading rooms.
Mr. Moily is a poet, a dramatist, a novelist, and a great man of letters. His works are POEMS Halu-Jenu, Maththe Nadeyali Samara, Yakshaprashne, "Sri Ramayana Mahanveshanam"
